Inside an old Woolworths

Woolworths closing was a seismic shift on the high street. It was a moment when it became impossible to ignore the change that was happening.

This set of photos on Flickr, taken inside an empty Woolworths, are a powerful reminder of what’s gone. The familiar Woolworths corporate colour, a dusty jade, is seen in old baskets, on walls and on doors.

What is perhaps most interesting though is the grand double staircase in these pictures; Woolworths were originally big department stores with many floors, but were all reduced to just selling at street level. That’s when the decline in their fortunes started; long before Woolworths actually closed their doors.
