Shipping containers make indoor street

26 shipping containers, arranged in terraced rows to form streets, have been converted into affordable glazed office units.

Housed inside an old Sharp’s electronics building, the units are at the heart of The Sharp Project. Tenants produce TV titles, graphic design, film content, copywriting and marketing services. Rent starts at £50 per week.

Attracting small creative businesses, the building now ships digital content around the world, rather than the electronic hardware it shifted as a warehouse. Elsewhere in the building are more conventional offices and co-working spaces.

The  £16.5m complex aims to create a ‘counter-corporate’ location for likeminded creative companies to complement the bigger businesses based at nearby MediaCityUK in Salford. It’s been jointly funded by Manchester City Council, the Northwest Regional Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.
