An empty tyre shop at an Indianopolis suburban shopping mall has been transformed into a community centre by arts organsiation Big Car.
The Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community is a space for exhibitions and events, a library and computer lab, and a co-working space. An allotment has been planted in raised beds on the forecourt. And two murals give the former garage ‘ionic architecture’ status.
“Really, that is an economic development tool and a marketing tool,” says Big car’s founder Jim Walker. “But for us, it still is an art project.”
