Peace residency at Newcastle Common

Empty Shops Network founder Dan Thompson spent two weeks in November 2021 in Newcastle Common, the empty shops programme run by Appetite

Dan has previously worked with Appetite, including a year-long residency on London Road, Stoke, and in 2020 was invited to become lead artist on their Newcastle Common project, helping the team devise key themes for the three year project.

In November, he got to experience the space not as lead artist, but as visiting artist – launching his new project Peace with a two-week residency. Inspired by the story of local Vera Brittain, he ran workshops in papermaking and letterpress printing with local people. He also worked with students from Newcastle Common, who were set a challenging brief and held their own exhibition on the theme of Peace in December 2021.
